Content and Curriculum

HALF DAY AND FULL DAY:
Oral Expression and Listening:
Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, Listening, Meta-cognition, Speaking, Understanding.
Students understand that they use language appropriate for purpose and audience and collaborate effectively as group members or leaders who listen actively, respectfully pose thoughtful questions, acknowledge ideas of others, and contribute ideas to further the group’s attainment of an objective.

Reading:
Comprehension, Language, Patterns, Understanding
Unit 1: Students understand the joy and excitement of reading. They want to read and believe they can read.
Unit 2: Students understand that through inquiry and exploration of text readers can gain information.
Unit 3: Students understand that talking about books builds understanding.
Unit 4: Students understand that they need to flexibly apply fix up strategies to ensure meaning is made.
Unit 5: Students understand that they can make connections to the stories they read, both personal and across text.
Unit 6: Students understand that we need to look across multiple text on one topic to gain the insight of many authors and develop a broader understanding.
Unit 7: Students understand that they now have many experiences and tools to use as they read for fun and read for learning.

Writing:
Author's Craft, Collaboration, Comprehension, Critical Thinking, Language, Patterns, Understanding, Writing Processes
Unit 1: Students understand that they can share their ideas through interactive writing opportunities as well as independent drawing/writing.
Unit 2: Students understand that they can look to authors to learn what they do as writers.
Unit 3: Students understand that there is a purpose for writing and in this unit it is to instruct someone “how-to” do something.
Unit 4: Students understand that telling a story with detail can hook and engage a reader.
Unit 5: Students understand that doing research will allow them to seek answers to the questions they have on a topic.
Unit 6: Students understand that it may take several attempts to tell a story, they will work to persevere through obstacles they face.

Math:
Communication, Connections, Modeling, Patterns, Problem Solving, Quantitative Reasoning, Relationships
Unit 1: Students develop understanding of quantity, build foundations for addition and subtraction, and explore 2-D shapes.
Unit 2: Students understand that real life experiences can generate addition and subtraction problems with the structures Add to/Take From and Put Together/Take Apart.
Unit 3: Students understand that quantities and shapes can be seen as a single whole or as two or more parts.
Unit 4: Students learn that noticing patterns and recognizing similarities and differences leads to understanding structure in mathematics.
Unit 5: Students use the structure they see in the number sequence, part-whole relationships, addition and subtraction situations, and measurable attributes of objects to solve problems and to explain and justify their thinking.

FULL DAY ONLY
Science:
Cause and Effect, Change, Energy, Form and Function, Order, Organization, Patterns
Unit 1: Students will understand that all objects have physical properties that can be used to sort them.
Unit 2: Students will understand that living things and objects can move in a variety of different ways, and that movement can be harder or easier to predict.
Unit 3: Students will understand the effects of the Sun providing heat and light to Earth.
Unit 4: Students will understand that living organisms have common physical traits, each of which may have details that make the organism unique.

Social Studies:
Citizenship, Collaboration, Communication, Continuity and Change over Time, Cost and Choice, Historical Process, Human and Physical Interaction, Individual Rights vs. Common Good, Listening, Power and Authority, Scarcity, Speaking
Unit 1: Students will understand that they have specific roles and responsibilities within their classroom. They understand that respectful communication, specifically taking turns and active listening, are keys to becoming a healthy community of learners.
Unit 2: Students understand that rules and civic participation are needed for a classroom community to be successful.
Unit 3: Students understand that people use sequence to describe when events take place (past, present and future). Students will understand that historians learn about the past by asking questions.
Unit 4: Students understand that ownership (personal and collective) is a component of economics. There is an emphasis on sharing, which supports the ongoing concept of citizenship.
Unit 5: Students understand that people live in different places and that geography impacts how people live.
