Common Core

Dear Parents,

There is a lot of information about the common core and math instruction out in the world today. Our goal at Weber is to help students with 3 parts to understanding math.

  • First, math fluency, what we are all familiar with, knowing the math facts and algorithms in such a way we can solve any problem.
  • Two, concepts of math, the big ideas behind the fluency such as number sense, place value, groups and grouping numbers e.g. distributive property.
  • Finally, the transfer and application of the math to new ideas or deep rich problems.
As you may or may not know, our new resource Math Expressions has really increased the rigor for the math, but one of the really cool things that it does is that it teaches our students those concepts, and allows them to start to apply to new situations in their word problems. The video below is really a good explanation of what the instructional purpose is behind some of the common core test items you might see posted on Facebook, TV shows, the internet etc.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact me.

Thank you for your support,
